How it all started
The band was formed in 2009 by the integration of the well established “Lincolnshire Concert Band” with Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue. Many Fire and Rescue services are associated with band music, and in particular parts of the country the association would be with brass or silver bands. Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue for many years was indeed associated with a brass band, over time they struggled for players and our then Musical Director Brian Newland who conducted both bands had the idea of the Concert Band amalgamating with the Brass Band to form a new "Lincolnshire Fire & Rescue Concert Band (LFRCB)", from then on the band has been strong in numbers and it's been quite an incredible journey. The band recognises that it is the public representation of Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue, and although band members are volunteers from all walks of life, they wear the uniform of Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue with a great deal of pride.

The band as it is now has quite a history to be proud of, prior to the Lincolnshire Concert Band associating with Lincolnshire Fire & Rescue in 2009 we can trace our roots back to 1972 when the original band was born, known then as The Lincolnshire County Military Band. Later on the band had a name change to Lincolnshire Concert Band. In 1969 The City of Lincoln started a twinning with Neustadt an der Weinstrasse in Germany which is still strong today and our band has also maintained a twinning with a Neustadt band for over 50 years now. We keep in regular contact with our friends from www.musikverein-diedesfeld.de (MVD) and we like to see them regularly. We have made numerous trips to Neustadt over the last decade to make music together and we enjoy welcoming MVD band over to Lincoln also. We are heading over to Germany in May this year for a long awaited get together.

In 2016 the band progressed into a marching band as well as a traditional seated concert band, most of the other Fire Service Bands in the UK are marching bands and by learning to do this we've been able to take part with our fellow bands at some very high profile events including The Armistice Day Ceremonies at The Menin Gate, Ypres, Belgium and Parades through Central London for The National Firefighters Memorial Days. We also perform at Lincolnshire Show every year in The Main Ring and are advancing further with our marching capabilities. Not all of our band are able to march and some choose not to, so don't let this put you off if you are thinking of coming along to join us.
We welcome musicians of any skill level, we have a mix of beginners right through to ex military/professional players, all we ask is that you are able to read sheet music and are committed to attending as many rehearsals and engagements as possible.

We have rehearsal room facilities at Lincolnshire Music Service, Primary Academy Site in Cherry Willingham near Lincoln. We rehearse every Thursday evening from 7.15pm to 9.30pm. Through Spring and Summer we have Marching rehearsals on regular Sundays at The Police & Fire Headquarters in Nettleham. We have a huge library of music that we've slowly added to since 1972, it's not often that a piece requested isn't in our library and every year we buy new music to increase our variety.

Being born into Salvationist family, Richard developed a keen interest in music from a very young age, being given his first instrument – a cornet – at the age of five. A couple of years later they were brave/foolish enough to give him a mouthpiece. It is from this that his life-long love of music really began, and continues to this day.

Aged 6, he took up the Clarinet, progressing quickly and by the age of 12 had completed all his Grade Exams. He also continued to play brass – Eb Bass by this time – with the Salvation Army Junior Band but was to focus mainly on his Clarinet playing and at 15, he achieved a Performer's Diploma from the Royal College of Music. Soon realising that his professional future would be in music, he joined the RAF as a Musician in 1984, becoming Principal Clarinettist with the world-renowned Central Band from 1989 to 2010. During this time, he performed as a soloist on the stage of many of the UK's finest concert halls, and on BBC Radio 3.

Whilst undergoing Continued Professional Development in RAF Music Services, he began to take a keen interest in conducting, and in doing so gained a Professional Diploma in Musical Direction in 2005.

Richard is married with two daughters (and a much-adored Flatcoat Retriever) and has a keen interest in photography, hill-walking and motorcycling.
