How it all started
The band was formed in 2009 by the integration of the well established “Lincolnshire Concert Band” with Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue. Many Fire and Rescue services are associated with band music, and in particular parts of the country the association would be with brass or silver bands. Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue for many years was indeed associated with a brass band, over time they struggled for players and our then Musical Director Brian Newland who conducted both bands had the idea of the Concert Band amalgamating with the Brass Band to form a new "Lincolnshire Fire & Rescue Concert Band (LFRCB)", from then on the band has been strong in numbers and it's been quite an incredible journey. The band recognises that it is the public representation of Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue, and although band members are volunteers from all walks of life, they wear the uniform of Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue with a great deal of pride.

The band as it is now has quite a history to be proud of, prior to the Lincolnshire Concert Band associating with Lincolnshire Fire & Rescue in 2009 we can trace our roots back to 1972 when the original band was born, known then as The Lincolnshire County Military Band. Later on the band had a name change to Lincolnshire Concert Band. In 1969 The City of Lincoln started a twinning with Neustadt an der Weinstrasse in Germany which is still strong today and our band has also maintained a twinning with a Neustadt band for over 50 years now. We keep in regular contact with our friends from www.musikverein-diedesfeld.de (MVD) and we like to see them regularly. We have made numerous trips to Neustadt over the last decade to make music together and we enjoy welcoming MVD band over to Lincoln also. We were planning a big 50 year twinning celebration in Lincoln but unfortunately due to Covid this hasn't happened yet.

In 2016 the band progressed into a marching band as well as a traditional seated concert band, most of the other Fire Service Bands in the UK are marching bands and by learning to do this we've been able to take part with our fellow bands at some very high profile events including The Armistice Day Ceremonies at The Menin Gate, Ypres, Belgium and Parades through Central London for The National Firefighters Memorial Days. We also perform at Lincolnshire Show every year in The Main Ring and are advancing further with our marching capabilities. Not all of our band are able to march and some choose not to, so don't let this put you off if you are thinking of coming along to join us.
We welcome musicians of any skill level, we have a mix of beginners right through to ex military/professional players, all we ask is that you are able to read sheet music and are committed to attending as many rehearsals and engagements as possible.

We have rehearsal room facilities at Lincolnshire Music Service, Primary Academy Site in Cherry Willingham near Lincoln. We rehearse every Thursday evening from 7.15pm to 9.30pm. Through Spring and Summer we have Marching rehearsals on regular Sundays at The Police & Fire Headquarters in Nettleham. We have a huge library of music that we've slowly added to since 1972, it's not often that a piece requested isn't in our library and every year we buy new music to increase our variety.

You can keep up to date with what we're doing by following our public Facebook Page and X profile by clicking the gallery link above. We have a Facebook group as well but this is for band members only, so make sure it's the page you click on, not the group.
Behind the Band
James Wood - Musical Director
James started at a young age making music with brass bands primarily playing Tuba before joining The Lincolnshire Army Cadet Force and progressing through the ranks to become their Musical Director. In 2016 our long standing Musical Director Brian Newland saw James' potential while assisting us at several events. He was soon asked to become our Assistant Musical Director and supported Brian for a number of years at rehearsals and concerts. After Brian's retirement in late 2021 the band offered the position to James who gladly accepted.

Alastair started out in music at a very early age playing violin from age 6. At age 14 he decided to take up a second instrument with the newly formed Saxilby Youth Band, initially on trumpet for a few weeks it turned out they had no bass so Alastair changed onto tuba and learnt how to play it. He continued for a few years but after leaving school stopped playing music all together. At age 24 and working at the hospital he got chatting to a colleague at a Christmas party who played in the band, the band had no tuba player so he was asked to come along and see what he could remember! He is now one of the band managers, apart from being a tuba player he works hard behind the scenes to keep the band running and really enjoys being a big part of LFRCB.
